The World Ice and Snow Sailing Association (W.I.S.S.A.) divides its ice sailing competitions into three different classes:
Open Class Also called the Sailboard Class. The sailor stands on any type of sled or board to control a conventional sailboard rig attached only with a universal joint. The sled may have blades, skis and/or runners.
Hand held sails Class Also called the Free-Sail class. The sailor stands on any type of sled, skis, skates or a snowboard to control a hand-held sail (such as a skate sail, Kitewing (skimbat), wingsail, etc.). Control lines are not allowed.
Kite Class Kite surfing. The sailor stands on any type of sled, skis, skates or a snowboard to control a kite (or kite train) with control lines. The maximum line length allowed is 50 meters. Kevlar and metallic flying lines are not allowed.
